There are many ways to evaluate the breeding potential of the many pumpkin seeds that are available today. We have taken the data of the official GPC Weight Offs for the past eight years (plus selected records from prior years) and built a database with over 16,000 pumpkins. We have examined this data from many different perspectives and have found that our favorite ranking consists of taking only those seeds which have grown at least 5 pumpkins of at least 850 pounds and ranking them on the basis of the average weight of the pumpkins.
Here are the top 30 using this approach. It isn't meant to be a definitive ranking, just a tool to give some insight into seeds that we want to consider in making our planting decisions. When we look at this data (along with the top ten pumpkin weights) we are particularly impressed with the 2009-Wallace-12, 1744.5-Fulk-13 and 1623.5-Wallace-12.
We are, of course, also very excited about the possibilities of some of the 2014 grown pumpkins (the three Meier pumpkins being at the top of that list), but at this point they can not be included on the above list because no pumpkins have yet been grown from these seeds.
